I guess with 5 kids, you are somewhat of an expert!

  2. Excellent advice! I needed these reminders today. :)

  3. As a father of six (3 boys, 3 girls), I have to agree — very good list!

I’d add “have them do chores.” This helps insulate against a sense of entitlement, builds a balanced value of work, teaches them to value their home, and helps them understand that we all live in the house (or the world) together — that when we all do our part things flow much more smoothly.

  4. I love this line the most. “Children learn more from observation than they do from what you tell them.” I would like to add: Parents do as well. Some of the most humbling moments in parenting is when I observe and think Ouch! or Yes, we are on our way. Being mindful to model what you expect to be the standard in the household is easier said than done, but there is not a day that has gone by that I can’t say I least gave it the college try and took the deficits with the success. Awesome list Tracy! This a great checklist for everyone involved with our youth.

  5. Hi Tracy – these are great tips. I’ve definitely fallen down on some of them though – especially my reaction to stressful situations. I never considered that seeing me get stressed could affect my children’s confidence but I can see how it would.
